18 packs per box, four cards per pack

2002 SPx is a 250-card set issued in two separate series. The SPx product itself was released in late April, 2002 and contained the first 190 cards.

This set was notable for featuring the first ever licensed, game-used, nameplate bat barrel cards of active players in an insert set. This landmark innovation of featuring on-card nameplate barrels started with the Bat Barrel insert in 2002 Sweet Spot Classics and continued in this set. The game-used memorabilia craze was in full gear at the time and these game-used nameplate barrels were both novel and trendsetting as competing companies began featuring nameplate barrels in subsequent releases in later years and are still featured in modern-day releases (although modern day releases are not explicitly game-used as these were).

Cards 91-120 make up the "Rookie/Young Star" subset. There are two different versions of each Rookie/Young Star (portrait or action shot), and each card is serial-numbered to 1800 cards (for a total of 3600 of each player). A set is considered complete with only one version.

Cards 121-150 were not serial-numbered but instead feature autographs and were seeded into packs at a rate of 1:18.

Cards numbered 151 through 190 make up the "SuperStars Swatches" subset, and feature jersey swatches of leading major league players. These cards had a stated print run of either 700 or 800 serial-numbered cards.

A typical 18-pack SPx box should yield one Winning Materials game-used card, one autographed prospect card, and a third "hit."

The final 60 cards (191-250) were distributed in mid-December, 2002 within packs of 2002 UD Update Cards 191-220 feature veterans on new teams and were commonly distributed in all packs. Cards 221-250 feature prospects and were all signed by the player. Each autographed card was seeded into Rookie Update packs at the rate of one-per-box and serial-numbered to 825 copies.
